While tucking into a delicious lobster thermidor at Wrights last night I faced a bit of stick for the lack of freshness of my posts, that typically I spent far too long digesting a food experience before writing it up. It's true. I've still got a Valentines night meal to post as well as nice lunch at Foliage. For a change, here I'm writing about some food while I can still taste its comforting spiciness.
When Broadway Market first opened I was pretty excited. I live only five minutes walk from it . . . what luck! But I don't perhaps go there as often as I might. I was put off slightly by the clothes stalls (you can't eat a jumper!) and also that you could get most of the stuff at Borough (Chegworth juices, Northfield Farm meat etc.). However, over time the market has developed its own identity and there are things there that you can't get in Southwark.
Today I returned to the Gujarati Rasoi stall. A couple of weeks ago I was really impressed by a samosa or two from there, but today I had Idilly Sambhar. This is steamed rice cakes with a dhar made from lentll, coconut and curry leaves poured over it. The Sambhar is a combination of fresh carrots, cabbage and red peppers and then finally the dish is dressed with a coconut and yoghurt chutney. It's absolutely delicious . . . the flavours are layered and gradually change throughout the eating of it, sweet but with some sour acidity, all the while a subtle heat builds up.
The stall is entirely vegetarian, the other main dishes on offer being Samosa Chatt and Chunna Butteta (spicy chickpea and potato sakh with sev momra, chopped coriander and chutneys). Right, that's my next two Saturday lunches sorted out.
They also sell sauces to take away as well as snacky samosas and dhokra.
Highly recommended.
